Cantor Fitzgerald Announces Promotion Of Shawn Matthews As CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald & Co.
New York (March 2, 2009) – Cantor Fitzgerald announced that Shawn Matthews, Executive Managing Director and head of the Debt Capital Markets group, will become CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald & Co., with overall executive responsibility for the firm’s Debt Capital Markets, Investment Banking and Equity Capital Markets businesses. Philip Marber, CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald’s Equity Capital Markets group, who will remain a partner and employee of the firm, will step aside from day-to-day management of the institutional equities business and is transitioning to a new long-term focus on strategic direction and recruiting of key professionals.
Mr. Matthews’ new role is his third promotion at Cantor Fitzgerald within 18 months. He was named Executive Managing Director and head of Debt Capital Markets in March 2008, following his promotion in September 2007 as Senior Managing Director and co-head of mortgage-backed sales and trading.
Howard W. Lutnick, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Cantor Fitzgerald, L.P. said “Under Shawn’s leadership, our fixed income business has grown at an extraordinary pace, both in revenues and in the size and quality of our sales force.” Mr. Lutnick noted that the firm’s U.S. equities business also was up substantially last year, adding “Phil has been instrumental in building our team, developing strong relationships with clients, and in guiding the success of our equities business.”
“In his new role, Shawn will focus on recruiting key professionals to the equities and investment banking sector as well as continuing to build our fixed income platform,” Mr. Lutnick said. “With his proven ability to broaden the scope and depth of our sales force and trading desks, I am extremely excited about Cantor’s ability to continue providing exceptional value to our customers while accelerating the growth of our institutional fixed income, equities and investment banking businesses.”
Mr. Matthews commented, “This is a perfect recruiting moment in the marketplace. We added nearly one hundred sales and trading veterans last year and fully intend to continuously expand our talented fixed income team. The firm’s success and momentum will also energize our efforts to attract and retain high caliber investment banking and equities professionals with deep industry knowledge who share Cantor’s uncompromising commitment to customer focus.” He added, “The opportunities ahead to align equity sales across product lines with fixed income and investment banking, and to grow our business, have never been better.”
Mr. Marber said “Given Cantor’s tremendous accomplishments, it’s been my goal to transition from operational responsibilities for our equities business at the right time. I look forward to working closely with Shawn to identify and recruit key sales/trading professionals to join our team, and am enthusiastic about the combination of Cantor’s product expertise, technology and unwavering focus on customer service, which will continue to propel our success across the global capital markets.”
